Society is wonderfully diverse. That fact won’t come as much of a surprise to anyone walking the streets of Berlin or another big city. And yet, diversity and inclusion are often not discussed and represented in the fashion industry. Distorted and misguided beauty ideals continue to dominate. But there’s hope in sight. Over the last season in particular, more fashion brands than ever before have begun to focus on diversity in their lookbooks and campaigns. Here, we present five great fashion brands that celebrate diversity and inclusion.
Diversity fashion label #1: J. Crew
Back in 2018, this American fashion label expanded its clothing sizes and now includes XXS all the way to XXL. What’s more, the brand recreated the preppy style using sympathetic and realistic-looking models. Women with curves, loud freckles or hijabs will find themselves here.
Diversity fashion label #2: Chromat
Chromat, the American swim and sports fashion brand, has spent the last few seasons injecting some society-altering energy into New York Fashion Week. The brand’s pieces aren’t modeled on the runway by immaculate bodies, but instead by beautiful women with all their flaws and differences intact and visible. Plus-size models, trans models, models of color, women with prosthetics, women who have suffered from breast cancer – simply beautiful and inspiring women!
Diversity fashion label #3: Eckhaus Latta
Also originating from the US, Eckhaus Latta is a pioneer in all things diversity. The label has previously presented its fashion using ethnically diverse models, models of different sizes and genders, and a wide range of ages. Indeed, the use of older models is still rare in the business.
Diversity fashion label #4: Premme
Edgy, naughty and noisy fashion – that’s what Premme stands for. The label calls itself a brand for “babes of all sizes” and especially for those whose measurements may not conform to the norm. Created by self-labeled “fat babes” Gabi Gregg and Nicolette Mason, Premme has cleverly designed the perfect cuts so that customers can find the best fit.
Diversity fashion label #5: Kurt Geiger
Kurt Geiger may be traditional, but it’s far from dusty. Instead, the label robustly celebrates diversity. For its recent 2018 campaign, Kurt Geiger hired Joan Collins, Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay, fashion designer Zandra Rhodes and Alek Wek. Big names, no doubt about it, but they’re not your traditional celebrities either. And as far as we’re concerned, it’s a step in the right direction. We look forward to seeing more surprises from Kurt Geiger.
